  • Invasive Earthworms Controversy
    • Glaciers wiped out native earthworms in the Great Lakes Region 10,000 years ago. There are no longer any earthworms that are native to this region.
    • The forests in this region have developed without earthworms being part of this ecosystem.
    • Approximately 16 species of European and Asian earthworms have been found to adversely affect the Great Lakes hardwood forests.
    • Sounds like more research may be required to fully understand the situation, so in the meantime, they are erring on the conservative side and saying no worms should be introduced into any wooded area.
