Triple Bottom-line Measures

  • Creating Triple-bottom line margins
    • Economic Margins = Profitability
    • Community Margins = ??
    • Environmental Margins = ??
  • We don't have names for these because we haven't tried to create them.



Searching for Meaning

  • What if "Wealth" stood for the cumulative long-term triple-bottom line results
  • So how would "Community Wealth" contribute to overall Wealth?
  • Could we be economically wealthy, but our community wealth is bankrupt?

  • What if Community wealth contained...

    • Learning/Growing
    • Purposeful Work
    • Health
    • Connectedness / Belonging



Community Margins => Community Wealth

  • Sum of our community margins result in an increase (or decrease) in community wealth
  • So we need understand how the primary actions of the business create increase community wealth by creating qualitative and quantitative margins in:
    • Relationships
    • Accessibility
    • Learning / Growing / Adapting
    • Purposeful Work
    • Health
    • Connectedness / Belonging

A Few Words on Measurement

  • Everything that is really, really important can't be measured
  • What is the role of measurement?
  • We assign meaning to the measures?
  • We're not good organizationally with
  • Can we use stories?

  • Context: Transaction vs. Relationship
