  • Labs Updates
    • Natural Ventilation Guidelines - NV Season - criteria for when to even check to open windows?
      • If the forecast high for the day is 70 deg F or greater and the current outside air temperature is 60 deg F or greater, then the NV Daily Worksheet should be used to determine if it is a NV day or not.

      • Building Envelope credit will be included in tax return for 2012.
      • Tom needs amount of tax credit and the basic calculation justifying it today.

  • Food for Thought
  • Session Work
    • Resources Needed: trend log capabilities
    • Solar Thermal Panels Optimization
      • Check water flow rate (10 gpm per design, manufacturer recommends 1 gpm, is that per panel? We have 10 panels, so is that 10 gpm design based on that?)
      • Experiment if flow rate changes when P-2 is on vs. off
      • Verify if 10 gpm is optimal flow through panels
    • Radiant Floor heated directly from Altherma Experiment (October)
      • Update flow system diagram with measured flows for each zone/pump; impact of taking Annex off loop
      • Re-calibrate T-6, T-7, and manifold temperature gauges
      • Thermal image floor for leaks or inactive sections during heating test
      • Extrapolate results to 0-degree F outside day
      • Determine impact of 3-way mixing valve being limited on temperatures and operation
    • Earth Room Fan / Earth Tube Airflow Setting
      • Trend amps on Earth Room exhaust fan
      • Set Earth Room Fan speed so average velocity through most Earth Tubes is 85 CFM
      • Measure temps / amps to verify optimal integration (optimal heat exchange with Earth Tubes, efficiency of Altherma vs. fan energy)
      • Verify optimal setpoints to turn Earth Room Fan on and off for heating and cooling modes

      • Record desired/required space humidity for Annex occupants
    • BioBag research:
      • Denny Voss brought a BioBag he acquired at a trade show. He said it is compostable. After some research, it appears that it must be municipally composted(i.e. ground, turned, heated to 165 degrees in an ideal composting environment).
      • emailed BioBag about temperature needed for decomposition and which composting facilities in Metro- Detroit would accept this product. They responded with composters within 50 miles.
      • Kirsten found research on composting plastics.
  • Food for Thought
  • Session Work
    • Design Altherma Direct to Radiant Floor Heating Experiment for October
    • Schedule discussion in early October to discuss heating/cooling costs for first year of operation (Tom has cost data and heating degree days)
