Week of June 30
Nonprofit-in-residence Groundwerx.CI is dedicated to improving access to and participation in USDA child nutrition programs throughout metro Detroit. Their summer Meet Up and Eat Up program just launched for its second year, and they organized this block party at the Peterson Playfield in Detroit to promote it and to start serving kids nutritious meals.
Week of June 23
Pam & Keith Owens are a husband & wife team who operate three small writing and editing-related businesses out of the Green Garage: Five Easy Pages, Writing It Right For You, and Detroit Ink Publishing. Here they are enjoying a conversation about Canvas Detroit, a new book that explores Detroit's thriving art scene. The conversation was the first event officially sponsored by Pages on Livernois, another Green Garage business-in-residence set to open in northwest Detroit in the fall.
Congrats to business-in-residence Patronicity, a crowdfunding platform for local communities, on the launch of their beautiful new website, their transformative new partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, and their exciting new project: the next green alley in Midtown! Congratulations to entrepreneurship-focused nonprofit-in-residence Detroit Food Academy on winning TWO awards at the Michigan Corps Social Entrepreneurship Showcase last week! Here's DFA's Jen Rusciano (right) accepting a check from Erica from St. John's Health, who funded the first prize. They also won a $2,000 People's Choice award during the event!
Week of June 16
The interns have arrived! Five Green Garage businesses-in-residence are welcoming interns this summer to work on a variety of projects. Here are Brianna Whitfield and Kiran Jones from Duke University. They're both helping Detroit Food Academy develop and market Small Batch, DFA's in-house brand of student-made good food products. Brianna and Kiran are in Detroit as part of DukeEngage, an immersive service learning program that's in Detroit for the first time this year!
Here's Purabi Devi, an undergraduate from the University of Michigan who'll be spending the summer working on FoodLab Detroit's Operation Above Ground initiative. Purabi comes to FoodLab through UM's Detroit Community Based Research Program, part of the university's broader Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program.
Here's He Xian, a law student at Michigan State University who'll be spending the summer working on business-in-residence New Solutions Group's Global Detroit initiative.
Week of June 9
Caroline Peterson, a student at Kalamazoo College, is back at the Green Garage for the summer, tending our gardens and working for business-in-residence Red Panda. Here she is planting new flowers in our front yard garden. The hose she's using is hooked up to a tank on the roof that's been collecting rainwater!

The Tuesday Walking Group visited the DIA this week. Here we are lunching at the recently renovated Kresge Court and, by the way, the food was great!
