We track our waste, water, and energy usage every month in order to understand and reduce the impact that we as a professional community have on the environment. Here are our waste numbers for the last year. You can see that in December, thanks to community-wide participation in our recycling and composting systems, our 50 small business and nonprofits threw away just 67 lbs of trash total! Learn more on our Measurement Pages.

Here's Green Garage co-founder Tom Brennan welcoming people to our 3rd annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day reflection on Monday. This year's reflection was a powerful one: Colin Packard of nonprofit-in-residence FoodLab Detroit read "How We Stand Together," FoodLab's open letter about racial justice, and guest speaker Marsha Music read her new poem "Just Say Hi! (The Gentrification Blues)."
We're delighted to welcome Laura Settlemyer to the Green Garage coworking community this week! Laura is the new Assistant General Counsel for Michigan Initiatives for the Center for Community Progress, a nonprofit-in-residence that helps communities across the country transform vacant and blighted properties.

Check out this beautiful wall made from recycled granite by business-in-residence Earth Stones! During this Friday's brown bag community lunch, Earth Stones' John D'Anna will discuss the processes by which granite is quarried and transformed for use in buildings, and explain how and why he fashions the leftover material from those processes into beautiful new products like interior walls and landscaping pavers.

These cold, sunny days give us a great opportunity to explain how our solar thermal/radiant heating system works. When it was just 13° but sunny on Tuesday, we were using our solar panels to heat 5,000 gallons of water to 110°. That water then gets pumped through tubes in the Green Garage flooring, creating a comfortable working environment -- all thanks to the energy of the sun!
Nonprofit-in-residence Groundwerx.CI is starting off the new year with some big news: they're moving! We're sorry to see them go but wish them all the best as they continue to grow and do the great work of making life in Detroit neighborhoods better.
