Versions of Energy-10 input / output that model our design process for the Green Garage

V1.0 - Existing

  • Inputs
    • Existing walls, floors, roof, windows (none)
    • Existing heating system
    • No Cooling
    • Default lighting and other uses assuming office and warehouse uses
    • Zone 1 = Historic Building (8,721sf)
    • Zone 2 = Addition (2,720sf)
    • Refinements (since initial run)
      • Wall sizes
  • Outputs

V2.0 - New Envelope (Heating only)

  • Inputs
    • New Envelop walls, floors, roof
    • Windows: U = .27
    • Heating = Gas radiant heaters
    • No Cooling
    • Ventilation??? (How does Energy-10 simulate the ventilation of space?)
    • Default Lighting and Other Energy assuming office and warehouse uses
    • Zone 1 = Historic Building (8,721sf)
    • Zone 2 = Addition (2,720sf)
    • Refinements (since initial run)
      • Wall sizes
      • WWF% using Laura's numbers

V2.5 - New Envelope (Heating + Cooling)

  • Inputs
    • New Envelope walls, floors, roof
    • Windows: U = .27
    • Heating = Gas furnace upgrade (Eliminates any distortion due to existing heaters)
    • No Cooling
    • Default Lighting and Other Energy assuming office and warehouse uses
    • Area (sf)
      • Zone 1 = Historic Building (8,721sf)
      • Zone 2 = Addition (2,720sf)
    • Refinements (since initial run)
      • Wall sizes
      • WWF% using Laura's numbers

V2.7 - New Envelope (Analysis of Cooling)

  • Inputs
    • New Envelope walls, floors, roof
    • Windows: U = .27
    • Heating = Gas furnace / DX Cooling
    • Default Lighting and Other Energy assuming office and warehouse uses
    • Zone 1 = Historic Building (8,721sf)
    • Zone 2 = Addition (2,720sf)
  • Analysis
  1. Examine Solar Gain - use window shading to block solar gain
  2. Examine heat from lighting - eliminate internal lighting
  3. Examine heat from other internal sources - eliminate other sources
  4. Try running simulation under "Free Run" which is the building without HVAC, ventilation, internal gains
  • Refinements
    • Wall sizes
    • WWF% using Laura's numbers
  • Outputs

V3.0 - Best Fit Model

  • Inputs
    • New Envelop walls, floors, roof
    • Windows: U = .27
    • Heating = Geothermal Heat Pump
    • Cooling = Geothermal Heat Pump
    • Other considerations
      • Ventilation??? (How does Energy-10 simulate the ventilation of space?)
        • Energy Recovery Unit - There is a note on how to "fake" the system to model this
        • Earth-Air Tubes
      • Daylighting
        • First part is reducing the lighting load and heat gain ... assume 80% reduction
        • Second part is estimating the daylight levels (fc)
      • Solar Heating
        • Can do the Domestic Hot Water component.
        • Way to simulate heating component? Guess not
        • Way to reflect radiant floor heating? Guess not
        • Way to do thermal storage? Guess not
      • Window Shading
        • South windows: full shade Sep - Apr...partial May - Aug
        • West windows: Partial shade from trees May - Sep; limited shading remainder of the year
        • East windows full shade
    • Default lighting and other uses assuming office and warehouse uses
    • Zone 1 = Historic Building (8,721sf)
    • Zone 2 = Addition (2,720sf)
    • Refinements (since initial run)
      • Wall sizes
      • WWF% using Laura's numbers
  • Outputs
